Intel's dual-core desktop processors to ship in Q3 2005

Intel provided system builders with a comprehensive update about its
desktop, mobile and enterprise product lines for 2005 and 2006.
According to documents seen by THG, Intel will launch its first
dual-core desktop processor in the third quarter of next year; a mobile
dual-core will follow in the first quarter of 2006.

announces AMD Athlon 64 4000+, FX-55 October 19, 2004
AMD intends to hold the performance crown for desktop processors with today's
introduction of the Athlon 64 4000+ (2.4 GHz) and FX-55 (2.6 GHz) processor.
Microsoft: A
single license for a dual-core processor October 19, 2004
Microsoft announced that it will continue its per-processor licensing model with
the introduction of dual-core and multicore processors. Systems, which required
only one software license so far, will not need an additional license, even if
it will be equipped with a dual-core chip.

Intel's decision to cancel the 4-GHz Pentium 4 580J shifts the bragging rights
for the fastest desktop processors into AMD's hands for some time. The Athlon 64
FX-55 and 4000+ outpace Intel's processors on paper as well as in benchmarks.
Intel plans to stay competitive with larger cache sizes until dual-core chips
are available.
